How quadratic roots works
Solve ax² + bx + c = 0 with real or complex roots.
Formula and convention
D = b² - 4ac. Roots = (-b ± sqrt(D)) / 2a. Negative D produces a complex conjugate pair.A worked example
x² - 5x + 6 = 0 has roots 2 and 3.
Scope and precision
Coefficient a must be nonzero. Floating-point approximations may lose precision with nearly cancelling coefficients.
Displayed results may be rounded. Inputs are processed locally and are not stored by this site. Keep the original values if you need to reproduce the result.
