How fraction arithmetic works
Add, subtract, multiply, or divide fractions and reduce the result.
Formula and convention
Apply fraction arithmetic, then divide by the greatest common divisor. Keep the final denominator positive.A worked example
1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6, approximately 0.8333333333.
Scope and precision
Integers only. Zero denominators and division by a zero-valued fraction are rejected. Limits keep intermediate products in the safe-integer range.
Displayed results may be rounded. Inputs are processed locally and are not stored by this site. Keep the original values if you need to reproduce the result.
Why might another tool give a different result?
Compare unit definitions, rounding, period assumptions, and input values. This page states the convention used by this calculator.
